For a long period of time the backward region of Santal Pargana of Jharkhand was rendered weak, fragile and squarely barren due to apathy, indifference and insensitivity of the Bihar government. Unfortunately, the price of this apathy also was paid by the people of this region. It was counted among the most economically backward regions of India. It was during this time when Santal Pargana was facing turmoil, a group of enlightened thinkers decided to reshape the destiny of Deoghar district.
In the year 1948 nearly every districts of Bihar were in the process of establishing college or had already established one but the Santal Pargana District had not even registered its mark on the educational map of Bihar. A group of enlightened thinkers decided to reshape the destiny of this sacred place “Babadham(One of the twelve Jyotirlinga)”who were well aware of this cruel fact and it was their zeal for education that led to the birth of Deoghar College a pioneer institute of education in Deoghar. Great educationalist and philanthropist Late Pt. Binodanand Jha, Late Umapati Banerjee, and great intellectual who also owns the honor of being the first and founder Principal of Deoghar College Sri Krishna Nand Shahay held the first meeting on 26th March 1948 and came out with a resolution to established a college in deoghar. It was their firm determination, dedication and hard effort with which they reached to the figure of Rs 57,750/- as a voluntary contribution from the people of this area, and on 1st of August , 1951 the college was set up at rented house at Rani Kothi in William’s Town, by our very beloved politician, Socialist and Educationalist Pt. Binodanand Jha Ji. He also became the first president of the College Administrative Society who was accompanied by the first secretary Sri Umapati Banerjee. The trio ventured on this noble mission with zeal of a crusader, took up the task of reform through formalizing education and Deoghar College owes its existence to their wisdom, benefaction and philanthropy. In the beginning it got affiliation from Patna University for one session up to I.A. but with the establishment of Bihar University in 1952 it got affiliation for B.A in the year 1954-1955. It was a great achievement of the college that it got 1159 student registered in the very first year of its establishment (1951-1952) and soon it became a paradise of education with the multiplication of number of pupils. At present nearly 4000 students are enrolled in various courses like I.A/I.Sc, B.A/ B.Sc (Hons) and M.A/M.Sc. The institute is open to every section of society and is co-educational by nature since its establishment. As the college did not had its own building up to 1960 hence it was functioning in Rani Kothi at Williams town , and for the recruitment and interview of teachers the arrangement were made at R Mitra High School deoghar. The present building of Deoghar College was founded by the then Vice Chancellor of Bihar University Sri Shyam Nandan Shahay on 01st January,1953. Though the college started to function in its own building in 1960 but due to lack of fund the building could not be completed as per the plan because of which the library and classrooms were held in the nearby building on rent which were later on shifted in the newly constructed building. For the study of Science the president & Secretary of deoghar college convinced Sri Sri Thakur Anukul Chandra Ji for a donation of Rs 51000/- which they get and started the Science Building by the name of Sri Sri Thakur Anukul Chandra ji’s wife. After the establishment of Bhagalpur University in the year 1960 the college was affiliated with it and on 1st April 1975 this college became the constituent college of Bhagalpur University. Again On 3rd February 1992 Sido Kanu Universtiy came into existence and now the deoghar college deoghar became its constituent college. With the change in time the educational environment of this college was getting more oases which can be supported by the fact that in the year 2002 a student Jyoti Kumari became the topper of the newly formed state Jharkhand and won gold medal. This tradition of achievement is still continued by our students of Science and Arts every year by securing position in top ten of Jharkhand state. On one side it is well developed in the field of education where as on the other side it is also developing its infrastructure with rapid speed. With the help of District Administration girls common room has been constructed with the fund of Rs 10,57,000/-. We are grateful to the District Administration for their continuous support and cooperation.
The above members had contributed their precious time to build the college.
